We're Not Shut Down

It just seems like there isn't anything to post about these days. The Blog-o-sphere is has become quite filled, and everyone who's anyone (or no one for that matter) seems to have a blog.

Original Material is hard to come by...I hate going to 8 blogs and finding the same material on all of I def don't want this blog to become number 9.

Match that with the turmoils of life, and the fact that if you run a blog with anything entertainment related you have to update everyday...and quite frankly, I haven't the time for that. I have a personal blog that I update as I see fit with my opinions, you're more than welcome to view that.

Other than that...yeap...

So, for lack of a better term I guess you can say we're on hiatus.

We'll return as we see fit.

J. Cole _ New Mixtape

While back, I posted J. Cole's "Simba" video, and wasn't really sure who he was. Do I know more info now? Not really. He does have a mixtape out though:

Peep the tracklisting:

Oh, apparently, he's signed to Roc Nation, which is all you really need to know, I suppose.
If you liked the video I dropped, you should make this a priority.
Download? Clickity.

Yop, no need to thank me.

Louis Vuitton Never Ceases to Amaze Me

Find more videos like this at

While ya'll were looking for a CDQ version...

I was looking for the sample.

The sample is from Janko Nilovic and Dave Sucky from the album, PSYC' IMPRESSIONS (circa 1970). The track is entitled, In The Space. Get a whiff of it here. To me, the sample is doper than the actual song...but hey, what do I know.

As an added bonus, the CDQ version of the track is in the if you didn't already have it...

Don't say I ain't never gave you nothing.

The Kickdrums - Just a Game

Behold, hip-hop production team The Kickdrums. Yeah, that's right, didn't know they were Caucasoids, did you? That's OK. In any event, they just realized a non hip-hop EP, Just a Game, on your internet, for the free. Well...not entirely non hip-hop; the influence is certainly there. Two parts indie, one part downtempo, with a Sunday afternoon feel. Think Chester French, but without the electro smugness.

Here's a video for the title track, directed by Rik Cordero:

Album can be streamed here, if you need further convincing:

Like it? Need it? Clickity.

And in case you also need to acquainted with the duo as producers...

No need to thank me...much.

Who's J Cole? Don't know. Who's BB Gun, the director of the music video? Couldn't tell you. Wherever dude is from, though, after hearing him spit on this here joint, he needs to make himself less scarce. Take this, and enjoy.

Mos Def - The Estatic Album Sampler

Let me be the first to say, that this album sounds as amazing as you would expect it to. With that being said, click on the image for the link.

The Limits of Control - Review

Went to check this out last night...sigh...where do I begin...

This film had a lot of potential to be really cool. Espionage, a jive-walking silent bad-ass who performs a daily Kata to center himself, European failed me. It felt like a Peyote induced high for about 2 hours that I couldn't slip out of if I tried. Abysmal, in a (nice) word, defines this movie. Starting off really dope with interesting quips and coded terminology, the film seems to never find a plot nor decode the terminology for any of the viewers to understand. What you're left with, however, is about 120 minutes of mind numbing walking, aural motifs, a nude muse, and countless matchboxes that are so esoteric that you begin to care less and less about what the hell they could possibly mean. Oh and lest we forget...two espressos - in separate cups. It plays out like a bad student film from beginning to end, with a story that only makes sense to the Director and Writer. The one shining glimmer in this surrealist ego trip is the Cinematography which, if nothing else, seems as if it was thought out while sober. If you feel like wasting a few hours of your day, by all means, go see this film. However, if you're looking for something fun to watch, go see Star Trek.

Rating: A Single Bouier eyebrow-raise out of 5

We really don't update as much as we should...working on that...

Yea...that song and video is pretty amazing. I'm going through a minimalist phase right now, so I def appreciate this video a lot. Then, it's just good to have Maxwell back too.

Murs _ The Science

New video from Murs. Possibly my favorite track off of the album "Murs for President." Def worth a listen/pick up if you don't already have it.

Oh, and that lack of blogging from us...I could make excuses...but....

I'd rather not.

For some unknown reason, Blogger won't let me type stuff in with the video below this. However, this is what I had to say originally.

Rip: A Remix Manifesto.

Now, as you may or may not know, I don't blog on the weekends. But this is something that had to be shared. The Documentary deals with Intellectual Property, Copyrights, and Downloading. By far, one of the best films I've seen in ages.

J*DaVeY _ New joints.

New newness.  How new?  Well...that's of little consequence. You need this in your life.  No idea who J*DaVeY is?  Peep the official. For those in the know, though, I bring three tracks. You know the routine; click the links, jack the tracks, cheer the ears.

iFEEL [My personal favorite.]

Vid: 88-Keys (feat. Kanye West) _ "Stay Up! (Viagra)"

If you haven't peeped 88-Keys' The Death of Adam, now would be the time to do so.  Dope video and concept. Peep the cameo from Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy. All the prosthetic makeup done by Tony Gardner [known for doing the work on MJ's "Thriller", Shallow Hal, and various Daft Punk projects].

What?  Why yes, that is a sample:

You're welcome.

Sunday, March 15, 2009

Jack White has ANOTHER band.

Jack White of The White Stripes and The Raconteurs is forming another band called The Dead Weather. The lineup is as follows:  Jack White (vocals, drums, and guitar), Jack Lawrence of The Greenhornes and The Raconteurs (bass), Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age (guitar) and The Raconteurs (keyboard during 2006 tour), and Alison Mosshart of The Kills (vocals). Pretty psyched to hear White on the drums.

Oh!  I bring you tunes as well.  Their first single is entitled "Hang You from the Heavens".  Clickity.

For another joint, peep the official.

Vid: Handsome Furs _ "I'm Confused"

Handsome Furs, is a side project for Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner and his girlfriend Alexi Perry.  Their album, Face Control, is in stores now.  Word to wise: The video is very much NSFW. [That's N.ot S.afe F.or W.ork, for all you Web 1.0-ers.]  Directed by Scott Coffey.

Two New Videos _ Kid Cudi

First, Superboo...please don't ask me about the title...

Lord knows I'm a sucker for a beautiful woman...sheesh...

Next up, Day 'N' Nite (Crookers Remix)

I personally think that this version is better than the original video...sorry SoMe....

Enjoy and Thank me...sometime...maybe....fuck you.

Vid: Young Jeezy _ "Circulate"

Probably my new favorite music video as of right now. Jeezy steps out the box a little with this one. Who said music videos are dead? Directed by Terry Richardson. [<~~~Peep the official.] Apparently, Belvedere Vodka [yes, it's in the video] is setting up an ad campaign with the two of them entitled [surprise] "Circulate".

You'd love to know what that sample is, I'm sure. Peep:

Oh, but it's been sampled before:

9th's joint kinda trumps Dilla's cut, as much as I'd hate to say it. But I do like Don Cannon's loop job [that the Jeezy cut] overall.

In case you were unsure as to the purpose of Facebook...

Social networking, my ass.

New Ad Space: Mickey Factz x Honda

Hipster rapper Mickey Factz gets tapped to do a spot for the Honda Accord:

It's...not bad. In fact, whoever they have in the Marketing department who even knows who Factz is gets my respect. My only complaint is that I get the feeling Honda's getting more out of this than Mickey. If it was A-list artist, such as Common, Snoop, etc., then they would be able to benefit more from the deal, being established artists. But I doubt that Honda is going to take the steps necessary to get Factz that exposure. In fact, anyone who doesn't know who he is will probably assume that he's just a character created by Honda's think tank. Did they even drop a link for his website, at the very least? [Peep the official, by the way.] Nope; they did, however, manage to offer a link for their own campaign. They tried, that enough?

Vid: Calvin Harris _ "I'm Not Alone"

I'm a pretty avid fan of house/electro music. I somehow stumbled upon Calvin Harris's debut album, I Created Disco [arrogant, yes, I know] last year, and it's been a mainstay in my rotation ever since. This is the first single for his yet-to-be-titled sophomore effort. It's not great, but it serves its purpose. Video's a little weird.

For those wanting to become more familiar with Harris, here's everything you need to know:

I recommend "Merrymaking at My Place", "Acceptable in the 80's", and "The Girls". Everything else is just filler.

More info and treats found at his site. Peep the official.

Hope you enjoy.

Film Short: World Builder

A strange man builds a world using holographic tools for the woman he loves.

This award winning short was created by filmmaker Bruce Branit. World Builder was shot in a single day followed by about 2 years [!!!] of post production. Branit is the owner of Branit VFX [peep the official], a visual effects firm based in Kansas City.

Here's another short of his, 405:

Chances are, you're pretty familiar with Branit's work, whether or not you realize it:

True dopery.

Vid: Rick Ross (feat. John Legend) _ "Magnificent"

I'm a fan of Rick Ross. Yes, I'm aware that he did a correctional officer. And yes, I know 50 has made it a priority to body his career. But...I don't know. I like his output. This is no exception. Mind you, I don't think it was the best choice for his first single, but...we'll see. John Legend undersells himself a little, but there's only so much you can do on a Ross joint. That's a badass checkered tie he's rocking in the beginning, though. The concept for the video was fairly original; you don't see ninjas investing in horse racing often, if ever. Peep the Bacardi Limon plug, also. If I wasn't already a fan [and believe me, I am], then I'd be sold. case that song sounds familiar to you:

You're welcome.

Luda x The Roots @ Jimmy Fallon

Because apparently, no one told you that Illadelph's finest was Fallon's new house band. Peep the switch between songs, and the live redux of "I Do it For Hip-Hop" is noteworthy. And yes, that is a tuba player you see.

You know this our first time posting on The Roots? Interesting; seems they would've been on here by now...

Seriously, if you can look like this...

...then why are you wasting our time singing and acting?

The Knowles sisters are now doing ads for Japanese line Samantha Thavasa [peep the official]. If you see them on MTV, however, hit the mute button, and enjoy the show.

Vid: Musiq Soulchild - "So Beautiful"

OK, I'm not usually huge on Soulchild. Don't get me wrong, he's a decent artist, but he tends to play it too safe for my liking. His most recent effort, though? Definitely throws that out the window. This is dude's ballsiest album since SoulStar, and I banged that one pretty hard. [That's what she said. *ahem*] Perfect example of this would be his third single "sobeautiful". It's pretty dope; I'd usually make a more in-depth account, but...don't want to spoil it for you. Peep the video. And if you haven't bought/borrowed/stole Onmyradio yet, you shouldn't even be wasting time reading this.

Simply because we don't blog about Prince often enough...

Dropping a triple disc joint, exclusively online and at Target. Clickity for more info.

Since Bouier enjoys the original joint so much...

...figured he'd love the remix, with Teairra Mari.

You like Mari, don't you, Bouier? Don'tcha?

Clickity. [or the pic, of course.]

Where am I finding all these new artist from?

Ladies and Germs, please meet Mayer Hawthorne. The newest artist on the Stones Throw Label. You know, the label responsible for bringing you hit from Peanut Butter Wolf, Madlib, etc. Well, this guy doesn't rap...but he croons so soulfully. Something is just so dope about this guy's faux falsetto to me...Anyway, he hails from Ann Arbor, MI and is influenced by Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry, and Barry White; among others. The kid is a beast in my opinion...oH, where is the clickity? Well, if you've never been here, click on the above image. Or, Here. That is the lead single, "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out," as remixed by Astronote. For additional music, check out his Myspace Page.

One day, you'll thank me.

The Cinematics

The band is originally from Scotland, currently based in Ireland. If you haven't noticed by now, I'm into the whole Post-Punk Revival/Indie scene. This song, as well as many of their others, captures that sound perfectly and effortlessly. The song above is entitled "Keep Forgetting;" No it is not a homage to the Michael McDonald song...however, that joint is in fact funky. It is available on the bands album, A Strange Education.

Bonus....? Sure, why not.

How's that make you feel? In case you don't know what song sampled this...kill yourself.

Kanye @ VH1 [Audio]

I...warned you not to miss this.  It was fairly dope, save for the moments when Kanye chose to speak.  But you expected that, right?  Right.  You can still catch the individual performances at VH1.  It's really worth watching; the setup was designed by Martin Phillips, the man responsible for the Glow in the Dark tour, the last Daft Punk tour, and the latest Nine Inch Nails tour.  All the band members and backup singers had on weird Deft Punk-esque outfits and helmets.  Audio?  Told you I find it, and in decent quality, no less.  But enough talk.  Click the pic.  It's worth it, really.  Now if you'll excuse me, there's some swag on my DVR I need to delete...

Sidenote: If you haven't heard of/bought/downloaded Late Orchestration, make that a priority.

SIA _ Breathe Me (Four Tet Remix)

If you enjoy music as much as I, you will enjoy this remix to a great SIA song. Click on the image to listen and download.

Thought I'd start your day off correct.

New Flavor: Melanie Fiona

I could talk your ear off about who she is and where she's from [Toronto], or...I could let you just listen:

Like?  Good.  Peep the live joints, though:

How's that make you feel?  Thought so.

Need something for the doggy bag?  I bring you her first single, "Give It To Me Right".  Clickity. case you didn't know that was a sample:

No need to thank me; the first hit's always free.

Kanye x VH1 Storytellers

Kanye performing "Stronger", from the VH1 Storytellers series:

Dope.  I tried everything in my power to get the mp3 for this, but...VH1's flash player is coded like a douche, sew...the vid will have to do.  The entire performance airs on VH1 Saturday [that's the 28th, and I don't mean March] at 9 pm Eastern.  Set your DVRs.  I already did.  I'm sure someone will rip the whole performance on audio too, so...wait for that.

I try to ignore sh!†, keeps finding me.

I've tried to ignore this issue, isn't going away anytime soon.  Interpret this however you like, before I add my twopence:

Yes, sew...Joaquin Phoenix [that'd be the bearded gent on the left] has retired from acting to start rapping.  In fact, he made his debut a month ago in Vegas:

Sounds pretty bad, right? Phoenix's defense, he was drunk.  How drunk?  Drunk enough to fall off stage:

Phoenix has been asked repeatedly if this is a publicity stunt. His response:
"Might I be ridiculous? Might my career in music be laughable? Yeah, that's possible, but that's certainly not my intention."

In the first video above, Joaquin's decision is met with laughter, by Letterman and the audience alike.  Why?  Is the idea of a rap career now a punchline?  It wasn't a joke when Phoenix recorded the soundtrack for the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line.  And if it is a stunt, why does hip-hop have to be the gimmick?  Hasn't urban music suffered enough?

Don't know if it's a publicity stunt or not.  Don't care, frankly.  Put the mic down, homie [a colloquialism I apply loosely].  I'll leave the film puns to Bouier.

Jamie Foxx _ Blame It

This is pretty much the ONLY song that I like on the radio right now. By the way, this video is amazing, for the cameos alone (Son, is that Opie Taylor in the video?). AND, the video is various ways. Oh, lest we forget that it is also TECHNICALLY sound.

New T.I. Mixtape.

Hey, don't know if you knew this, but T.I. is going to jail. Yes, it's true. No, I didn't see it coming, either. You'd think Clifford didn't know either, the way he's been scrambling to drop material. I thought that that's what Paper Trail was for [in my opinion, his best album since Urban Legend]. You'd think he was doing 5 to 10 or something, or that he's never done time before. But no, Cliff's been working on videos and tours...and mixtapes. Here's the cover art:'d that get in there?

Not bad.

Peep the tracklisting:

01 Road to Redemption (Intro)
02 Party Ain’t A Party
03 Just Think f. Nas
04 Where I’m From
05 Goin Way Back
06 Do It To It
07 Boo f. 8Ball & MJG
08 Feelin You
09 Better Than This
10 Mind on My Money
11 Champ is Here f. Akon
12 Hero f. Akon
13 Turnin Me On
14 Daydreamin
15 Just Like Me
16 If I f. Justin Timberlake
17 Propane
18 Ain’t I (rmx)
19 Swagga Like Us (Live) f. Kanye West, Jay-Z & Lil Wayne
20 Gone Till November (Outro)

I mean, it's T.I., so it should be pretty decent. And he's going to jail, so...theoretically, he'd put more effort into it. But who am I to decide? Clickity. Seriously. He might shoot you.

Kid Cudi _ Day & Night Video

Told you.

Felt the need to point out that the imagery done at 2:37 is a nod to Prince's 1981 album, Controversy:

MF Doom x Dilla

Was hard-pressed to find a pic that hadn't been blogged to death. This will suffice. Prepping for his new album release, DOOM reworks Dilla's "Lightworks", which has always been my favorite Donuts track. Dope? You be the judge. Click the pic.

Socialite Sign-off...

Burn it.

I have to concur. Two times.

KiDCuDi x Kanye West @ 106 & Park

Another fresh young upstart from Hipster-Hop/New Wave/prog hop/call it what you like. He and Kanye, his [co]signer to G.O.O.D. Music [still waiting for Big Sean, but *shhh*], drop "freestyles" on BET's flagship show. Does anyone really freestyle anymore? *SMH*

Peep Kanye drop the verse off of Officer Ross' upcoming album. The return to rap is appreciated, but a> I pray it's not Auto-Tuned; and b> That shag has GOT to go. Be ashamed.

Pause for Hiatus

Are we back? Possibly. Stay tuned.

Excuses for Hiatus:
Bouier - Filming, Writing, Grad Apps, Reading, Internship Apps, Bills, Life.
Murph - Couldn't tell you. But I'm sure he has them, and I'm sure they are good ones.

What we've experienced as of late:
Large quantities of apathy, disinterest, and anger. We've been having our discussions of the various entertainment industries/sub-sects. One or two, we may post.

When we return from the commercial break however, there will in fact be more madness, more freshness, more Sneakers more Suits.
